52 Pick Up were formed in 2002 and, with their unconventional sound,
have quietly been gaining themselves a reputation as one of the
most exciting and original bands around. This three-piece from SW
London fuse raucous energy with social commentary to give the listener
a thrill of feel-good, bite-sized audio heaven. They were included
on last year's Top 20 UK Unsigned TBA/Virgin new bands’ compilation.
Fronted by the charismatic Yusuf B'Layachi with Tim Greany on drums
and Emma Bennett on bass, Pick Up exemplify quality songwriting,
all fresh from the quirky mind of B’layachi. Yusuf's lyrics
convey his very personal, humorous peculiarity–bringing to
mind the finer moments of Talking Heads and The Modern Lovers.
Having recently signed to indie label Fruit Pie Records,
the band has spent the latter part of 2004 in the studio with legendary
producer Nick Tauber recording their debut album, which is evolving
into a mini-masterpiece. Sean Genocky (Manic Street Preachers) is
mixing the album, production of which should be completed by the
middle of January 2005.
Their debut limited edition single will be released on 18th April
2005 with their album to follow later in the year.
